Impressive Lifting at State Championships

State 2014
A great crowd turned out at Lakeville South for this years championship meet.

The 2014 high school weightlifting season came to an end on Saturday, with the High School State Championship meet held at Lakeville South High School.  97 lifters from 12 schools qualified for this years meet, and the competition was top-notch as one would expect.  It made for a very exciting day of lifting.  When it was all said and done, we ended up with eight new high school state records, a new team points record, and several more record attempts.

For the individuals, we had four girls who broke eight of their own state records on Saturday. Destiny Young and Michaela McIntosh, both from Armstrong, both broke their clean & jerk records for their divisions and weight classes. Aneesa Ally of Burnsville increased both her snatch and clean & jerk, and therefore her total as well, setting three new state records. And Alicia Vogel of Lakeville South put it all together on the same day, breaking both her snatch and clean & jerk records, resulting in a new total of 157kg, shattering her old total by 12kg!

Here are this years individual state champions:

For the team competition, Burnsville wins the varsity division for their first ever team title, and they did so in dominating fashion.  The Blaze racked up a whopping 65 points, which ties the state record for most points scored at the state meet, set by Northfield in 2008.  Rosemount finished in the runner-up position, scoring 25 points.  Cannon Falls was right behind them for third with 23 points.   In the junior varsity division, Cannon Falls takes home their 6th straight team title, scoring 39 points.  They just edged out Lakeville South by two points, who places 2nd with 37 points.  We had quite a battle for third place, with Armstrong, Rosemount, and Northfield all totaling 18 point a piece.  Armstrong gets the nod by virtue of the number of first place winners for the tie-breaker.

Congrats to all Minnesota weightlifters, both new competitors and veteran lifters, on a successful season.  Good luck in your other sports, and we’ll see you back again next winter!
