2014 National Youth Weightlifting Championships Recap

Minnesota had 15 lifters representing Team Minnesota at the National Youth Weightlifting Championships held in Daytona Beach Florida over the June 12-15 weekend. Among the 15, were a number attending their first National Championship, while 2 of the lifters were defending National champions trying to repeat as Gold Medalists. There were many great performances, with some personal records set, some state records broken, some medals won 2014 Youth Daytona Beachand, for Team Minnesota, a Team Championship earned!

David Hausmann of Rosemount competed for the first time in the 16-17 age category in the 56 Kg class and earned the First Individual Minnesota National Championship at the 2014 Youth Championships. David hit all Gold Medals with a 63 Kg snatch and 76 Kg Clean and Jerk for a Solid Gold Medal total of 139 Kg.

Nate Oelke of Armstrong competed in the 16-17, 69 Kg class. He was the Second Individual Minnesota National Champion this year. He achieved his title with a 243 Kg total. He attempted a State Record in the Snatch of 102 Kg and broke his own State record in the Clean and Jerk with a 138 kg lift. He attempted a National record in the Clean and Jerk of 145 Kg, and just missed getting under the clean. It was a fantastic effort for Nate in his final year as a Youth competitor.

Connor and Eric Rousemiller of Lakeville South travelled to compete in Daytona as defending National Champions.

Eric moved up an age group, and was the youngest lifter competing in the 16-17, 105+Kg weight class, which may have been one of the toughest in the competition featuring the overall winner (Ryan Sennett), being the only male athlete selected for the Youth Olympic Games in China later this summer. Eric had a solid total equaling his best of 225 Kg, with a 100 Kg snatch (220 lbs) and a 125 Kg (275 lbs) Clean and Jerk. His effort was good for 6th place.

Connor Rousemiller started his competition in the 16-17, 105 Kg weight class with a Gold Medal and new State Record in the snatch with a 117 Kg lift (257 lbs). He went 3 for 3 in the Clean and Jerk finishing with a 140 Kg (308 lbs) lift and a total of 257 Kg. Connor ended up as the overall Silver medalist, as the winner was able to make his last lift at 141 Kg to take the Gold by 1 Kg with a 258 Kg total.

Team Minnesota also won a number of awards. Team MN is comprised of all Minnesota Weighlifters from around the State. The 16-17 boys team took 1st place, while the Overall boys team placed 3rd. The girls 16-17 team placed 2nd overall. Team MN also won a special cash prize award, the Glenn Middelton award, for the best combined boys and girls 16-17 teams.
