It was a great day of lifting at the Raider Open in Northfield on Saturday. There were 120 total lifters at the meet, and Burnsville took the team title for the second year. It was great to see new schools from southern Minnesota competing, like Tri City, Winona, Rochester, and Stewartville. There was one state record that was broken at the meet. Michael Schiller from Burnsville established a new record total in the varsity boys 77kg weight class, with 247 kilos.
The other meet was held at Rosemount High School, and there was some great lifting at that meet as well. 110 weightlifters from eight different school competed. At Rosemount, three different lifters combined to set six new state records and tie one. Alayna Theissen of Lake Crystal broke all three records for the varsity girls 75+ weight class. Her best lifts were 68kg in the snatch and 92kg in the clean & jerk, which results in a total of 160kg. Chase Schaefer of Cannon Falls High School broke two state record in the JV girls division. Competing in the 69kg weight class, she set the new clean & jerk record with 77kg on her third attempt. With that lift, she also broke the total record, getting 138kg. For the varsity boys division, An Phan of Shakopee set the new total record with 165kg in the 56 weight class. He also tied the clean & jerk record on his 2nd attempt with 91kg.
Overall it was another great day of weightlifting in Minnesota. There were a lot of improvements since the last meets held in December. Some of those improvements were huge. We also had quite a few new lifters who competed at not only their first meet of the season, but their first meet ever. The next meet is the Blaze Invitational at Burnsville High School. To accommodate all of the lifters we have, a second meet is being planned for that same day as well. More information on that meet, and where teams will be lifting, will be coming soon. Congrats to all and keep training hard!
