The annual Last Chance meet was held in Caledonia on Saturday. This was the final opportunity to qualify for the state meet for those lifters that were on the bubble. For those already qualified it was a chance to go for some big attempts. For others, it was their first weightlifting meet ever, so it was a great introduction and exposure to the sport.
It was a great turnout for the meet with nearly 70 weightlifters competing. This has traditionally been a 1-platform meet, but with the big number of participants, it was switched to a 2-platform meet for the first time ever. At the end of the day, there were several more athletes who qualified for the state meet that will be held in two weeks, and there are now 29 qualifiers whose highest total of the season came from this meet. Of the remaining lifters, 18 of them also finished with their season-best total. And on top of that, there were numerous personal records set, and even a few school records. Congrats to everyone!
A message and highlights from meet director, Eddie Hodges:
“I want to give a special thanks to everyone who helped me at the meet. If it wasn’t for them this meet would have never happened! Also, good job to all the athletes who competed! Good luck at state to those who made it and Congrats to everyone on a great season!”
- 77kg mens varsity weight class was a battle between 1st, 2nd, 3rd. I think this will be the weight class to watch at state!
- Some weight classes in the girls were pretty close and hard fought battles.
- A lot of kids lifted more then they probably would have at any other meet in order to make it to state!
